Mexico's Fortress Monasteries
Published in Paperback by Espadana Pr (January, 1993)
Author: Richard Perry
Average review score:

Essential companion for travels in central Mexico & Oaxaca.
This is an excellent book. It is by far the most readable and detailed account of these wonderful colonial monuments in either English or Spanish.

Superbly illustrated with dozens of original line drawings, this is a comprehensive survey of more than sixty ancient monasteries in central Mexico and Oaxaca. Many of them are architectural masterpieces. Most of them house extraordinary artistic treasures, whether in the form of murals, paintings, fonts or alterpieces.

The small villages where many of them are found go unrecorded in conventional tourist guides. Perry's landmark book has easy-to-follow sketch maps locating all the places described in the text and contains literally hundreds of little-known facts about the buildings, their contents and the background to their construction.

Why should you be interested in these monuments? Because, to quote the author, these are "buildings that not only mirror a crucial period in the history of the Americas, but continue to play a central role in the life of the Mexican people today." Few Americans know very much about the missions and monasteries of Mexico and anyone interested in the history of Mexico's colonial period, or interested in the country's art and architecture, will enjoy reading this book, even if they are unable to visit first-hand all the places described.

The book's value as a reference source is enhanced by a useful glossary, extensive bibliography and complete index.

The Money Interest and the Public Interest: American Monetary Thought, 1920-1970 (Harvard Economic Studies, 162)
Published in Hardcover by Harvard Univ Pr (January, 1998)
Author: Perry Mehrling
Average review score:

American Monetary Thinking of 3 Institutionalists, 1920-70-
Mehrling's uses the intellectual biographies of Allyn Young, Alvin Hansen and Ed Shaw to illustrate changes in American monetary thought from 1920-70. Young died in 1929 at the age of 52, too young to test his ideas under conditions of the Great Depression, but this sectionshows how the origins of the Federal Reserve system were supported by populists from the Middle West. Alvin Hansen was the most important of the three in terms of influencing economic policy. The great strength of Mehrling's book is his treatment of the relationship between Keynes's ideas in the General Theory, which were more influenced by revolting against Marshall, and those of Hansen, who made his reputation studying business cycles and whose pre-Keynesian ideas came out of the Continrntal historical school and were more like those of Schumpeter. Although it took Hansen some time to adjust to the General Theory, his famous seminar at Harvard in 1937 helped him understand the importance of Keynesia! n thinking. Like Keynes, he was able to change his ideas even though he was already in his fifties. He also used Keynes's conversion from neo-Malthusianism to pro-natalism to buttress his own secular stagnation hypothesis. He was most active in the late New Deal and pushed for the Keynesian thinking at Bretton Woods after the war. Ed Shaw, the last of the Mehrling trio, was noted for his building of the economics department at Stanford after the war. Shaw was a non-Keynesian from the beginning, even criticizing the deficit-financing of World War II. One of Shaw's recruits was Jack Gurley, who co-edited the second edition of Shaw's classic text and who introduced Keynesian thinking, making it more mainstream. Shaw, himself, was isolated from the profession despite his early adoption of many Friedman positions.

More Maya Missions: Exploring Colonial Chiapas
Published in Paperback by Espadana Pr (January, 1995)
Author: Richard D. Perry
Average review score:

Absolute Must for any Chiapas interest
I am the author of the "Adventure Guide to the Yucatan," a guidebook to the ruins and sites of Mexico's fascinating peninsula. I have been a fan of Richard Perry and his wife's writing since reading the "Maya Missions" book they did on the many ruined colonial missions in the Yucatan. This title is equally worthwhile with vivid descriptions of history and much detail on the colonial remnants of the Spanish church, in seldom-visited Chiapas. And their pen and ink drawings are evocative of the romance and tragedy of the conquest. A great book to make your Chiapas visit even better.

Moreh Derekh: The Rabbi's Manual of the Rabbinical Assembly
Published in Hardcover by United Synagogue of Conservative Judaism (01 May, 1999)
Authors: Perry Raphael Rank and Gordon M. Freeman
Average review score:

A Jewish manual for the 21st century
This is the first new rabbinical manual for Conservative Judaism in a generation. The last was published in 1965. This newer version is geared towards Jews who value tradition and halakha [Jewish law] yet also takes the side of innovation and egalitarian principles. Hebrew names of God are preferred over masculine English translations. As such, it should be appreciated by those in the traditional wing of Reform and Reconstructionist Judaism, as well as by those Modern Orthodox Jews who are open to exploring new expressions in Jewish liturgy.

Rituals found in rabbi's manuals are important because they transform incidents in the life of an individual into a communal event, and they offer the oppotunity to transform events from the mundane to the sacred, in an authentic Jewish manner.

This manual includes instructions and rituals for all the standard rabbinic practices, including births, brit milah [ritual circumcisions], simhat bat [the ceremonial equivalent of a brit for a daughter], pidyon ha-ben [redemption of the first born], weddings, divorces, prayers for those who are ill, and funerals. New works include prayers for retirement, going to college for the first time, and for wedding anniversaries.

There are special sections which deal with infertility, miscarriages, and even for those who have undergone an abortion. This is especially important, as although Judaism discourages abortion, it allows it under certain circumstances, and the resulting emotional turmoil can be devastating. For many women, having Jewish rituals for these traumatic events can be an important part of the healing process.

Many more sections are included, including blessings for adoption, the deathbed confessional, and more. All in all, this is a fascinating synthesis of traditional halakhic Judaism along with a brave spirit of egalitarian innovation.
